Imaginary Award for Best Novel & Novella

The Imaginary Awards for Best Writing, Part 1

2017 Imaginary Award for Best Novel

This category is exactly what you think: Here, we're looking for nothing less than the finest novel published (or published in translation) in 2017. We discriminate only based on length, so any work that has identified itself as a novella (usually by the publisher--Tor.com is really hitting it out of the park with kickass novellas) is not eligible for this award. Otherwise, anything goes--science fiction, fantasy, YA, weird, speculative, alternate history, and any work that doesn't fit neatly into those categories.

The nominees are listed below, with the winners in bold.

 The Power by Naomi Alderman

Daughter of Eden by Chris Beckett

Star's End by Cassandra Rose Clarke

American War by Omar el Akkad

Winter Tide by Ruthanna Emrys

Future Home of the Living God by Louise Erdrich

Terminal Alliance by Jim C Hines

The Wanderers by Meg Howrey

The Stars are Legion by Kameron Hurley

The Stone Sky by NK Jemisin

The Moon and the Other by John Kessel

Luna: Wolf Moon by Ian McDonald

Autonomous by Annalee Newitz

Akata Warrior by Nnedi Okorafor

La Belle Sauvage by Philip Pullman

Revenger by Alastair Reynolds

Sourdough by Robin Sloan

Borne by Jeff VanderMeer

2017 Imaginary Award for Best Novella

In the past few years, novellas have exploded onto the SFF, thanks in no small part to the excellent offerings coming from Tor.com. More than half of our nominees are from Tor, and they're certainly an impressive bunch. But, for this category, really the only thing that matters is length. Otherwise, any speculative work is eligible for nomination.

The nominees are listed below, with the winners in bold.

Landscape with Invisible Hand by MT Anderson

River of Teeth by Sarah Gailey

Taste of Marrow by Sarah Gailey

The Lamb Will Slaughter the Lion by Margaret Killjoy

Binti Home by Nnedi Okorafor

Ironclads by Adrian Tchaikovsky
